Gabicci Vintage: A True British Heritage Brand

From Mods to Rastas to Soul Boys, Gabicci has been a staple of British youth culture from its inception in 1973.

The brand was founded by Alex Pyser and Jack Sofier after they visited the Italian seaside town of Gabicci Mare and were inspired by the way the locals styled their knitwear and assorted clothing. They quickly developed a reputation for originality and innovation with their use of unique fabrics, buttons and linings.

It didn’t take long for Gabicci knitwear to be adopted by the ‘rudeboys’; the pork pie hat and loafer-wearing Jamaican and black British youths who would inspire much of the style associated with the two-tone movement. The phrase ‘yardie cardie’, which describes the full button knitted polos for which Gabicci has become synonymous, came from this style.

Naturally, the clean-cut Italian style that inspired Gabicci has made the brand nothing short of intrinsic to the ever-evolving Mod scene, seeing Gabicci knitwear, jackets and shirts become regular fixtures at Mod weekenders and scooter rallies across the UK and beyond. The gold ‘G’ logo has long been one of the most prominent symbols of the Northern Soul scene as well, and would later be regularly spotted amongst those of the casual persuasion, often alongside Farah trousers.

In more recent times, the brand has become increasingly popular with younger generations as the demand for authentic heritage brands increases in the era of commercialised fast fashion, and Gabicci’s classic, soulful look more than fits the bill.
